MYTH

There’s no need for a baby to be tested for HIV, so long as their mother takes antiretroviral treatment during pregnancy.

FACT

All babies born to mothers with HIV should receive HIV testing. They should be tested at birth or within two days after birth and then at 4–6 weeks old. If the baby is breastfed, they should be tested again at 9 months old and again at 18 months old or 3 months after breastfeeding finishes, whichever is later.
