MYTH
FGS is an STI.
FACT
FGS is not a sexually transmitted infection. The parasite that causes FGS cannot be passed on through sex. It can only be passed on through contact with contaminated water. However, some of the symptoms commonly associated with FGS, such as genital sores or discomfort, can be confused with the symptoms of an STI. As a result, health care workers who have not heard of FGS may misdiagnose it as an STI.
